UL 969 & CSA C22.2 Certified
PGDQ2/8 Marking and Labeling Systems FAQs

Polyester, specifically PET, is considered the “heavy hitter” for industrial, electronic, and high-performance applications. We use it for our UL-certified labels because it offers the highest level of dimensional stability and resistance to harsh environments. Polyester label constructions have extreme temperature resistance, chemical and solvent durability, tensile strength, and finally, UL compliance consistency. Polyester time and time again can meet, if not exceed UL 969 testing standards. It bonds exceptionally well with high-performance acrylic adhesives, ensuring the label meets the permanent bonding requirements for various surfaces, including plastics, metals, and powder-coated paints. Since UL labels often serve as critical safety warnings or identification for the lifespan of a product, the material must not shrink, fade, or degrade.

Our options for laminates for our UL labels include 1 or 2 mil (.001″ or .002″) clear polyester, 1 mil (.001″) matte clear polyester, and 3 mil or 5 mil (.003″ or .005″) velvet Lexan (polycarbonate).

While both are high-performance plastics, the main difference between polyester and velvet Lexan laminates is their durability profile and tactile finish. Polyester has better chemical resistance and heat stability than velvet Lexan. It is also thinner, making it better suited for labels that need to stay flush with the surface without adding bulk. If you are looking for a UL label with a more rugged or premium look and feel, velvet Lexan is excellent. Its texture hides wear and tear, plus it diffuses light so the label will have anti-glare properties. Additionally, velvet Lexan and comes in thicker gauges than polyester.

Type R and Type L labels refer to the two main ways that UL controls the printing and distribution of its certification marks. The difference between the two lies in the control method, traceability, and ordering flexibility for manufacturers.

UL Listed Mark (UL Type L)
This is the most common UL Mark and is applied to complete products such as computers, televisions, appliances, smoke detectors, and industrial products. Products bearing the UL Listed Mark are suitable for standalone use and have been evaluated against UL’s safety standards. UL Type L, or UL Listed Mark labels, often include the UL Listed symbol, product’s model number, electrical ratings, and specific warnings or instructions. The label construction, including the materials, inks, and adhesives must be able to last the product’s lifetime and may need to meet specific environmental conditions such as high heat or outdoor exposure as part of the UL file.

UL Recognized Component Mark (UL Type R)
This mark is applied to components, such as power supplies, circuit boards, switches, wires, certain plastics, or even specific label materials, that are part of a larger product or system which will ultimately be UL Listed. These components are not meant for standalone use and only achieve their UL certification as part of the end product. Labels for UL Recognized Components also bear a distinct symbol. Crucially, the label materials themselves, namely the facestock, adhesive, and ink system, often need to be UL Recognized Components under UL 969 – Marking and Labeling Systems. This ensures that the label itself won’t compromise the safety or performance of the larger product it’s applied to.

Our label constructions are certified for indoor and outdoor applications for a wide range of surfaces, and are designed to withstand harsh industrial environments. Please check the links to the UL yellow card for each label construction for details.
